Who we are

An organisation focused on empowering Ghana's Young Mother's and Children Future Through Sustainable Solutions and Community Self-Reliance.

History

Happy Hearts Association was established by Marcel Pelletier, an experienced Civil Engineer with over 25 years of dedicated service in Africa. In 2006, driven by a passionate vision for lasting change, Marcel founded the Association. Despite resource constraints, his unwavering determination fueled its inception. Marcel's deep understanding of the challenges in Africa led to extensive research, highlighting the urgent need for intervention. Over time, he observed these issues persisting and decided to focus on sustainable solutions. He recognized that material assistance often led to dependency, so he shifted towards empowerment and self-reliance as the key to transformation.Marcel Pelletier's inspiring journey continues to shape the Association's mission today. His wisdom and dedication guide our efforts to create lasting impact, empowering communities for brighter, self-sufficient futures.

Mission

Our mission at Happy Hearts Association is to empower young mothers, liberating them from degradation and poverty, particularly those who have turned to prostitution for survival. We provide alternative income-generating opportunities, including seasonal agriculture work and household assistance, while also imparting vital business skills in management, marketing, and accounting. Through collaboration and a supportive community, we aim to foster transparency and accountability among these young mothers. We are committed to education, helping those who wish to continue their studies while providing them with donated land and equipment for their enterprises. Our goal is to make these young mothers self-sufficient, ensuring a brighter future for themselves and their children through access to quality education.

Our Aim

Our primary goal is to empower young people and prevent them from falling into lives of destitution and hardship. Unfortunately, many young mothers turn to prostitution as a means of survival, which only further complicates their lives when they have children to care for without the means to provide for them adequately. This often traps them in a cycle where prostitution seems like their only option for earning money.

However, there are alternative avenues available for young people to earn a living. For instance, there is seasonal work like weeding fields and plantations, although it's not very well paid. Another option is to offer household assistance or babysitting services, which may provide them with a place to stay and some food, though it doesn't offer substantial financial stability.

Tragically, some young mothers also face abuse from male family members, leaving them entirely dependent on their benefactors. Many of these young mothers, some as young as 15, do not want to engage in prostitution, but they lack the support of family and friends and have no other means of survival. Some of them share living spaces with other young mothers to provide a modicum of security.

Our aim is to help these young mothers transition into respectable and sustainable livelihoods, fostering their success. We plan to provide training in their chosen enterprises, equipping them with essential skills in management, marketing, and accounting to make their ventures prosperous. Additionally, some of the younger mothers may have the opportunity to return to school if that aligns with their goals.

The projects we oversee aim to create employment opportunities and responsibilities for single mothers, enabling them to operate their own enterprises and achieve self-sufficiency. The resulting benefits will not only sustain their livelihoods but also support their children's education, recognizing that education is the key to breaking free from poverty.

The Happy Hearts Association will oversee and support these enterprises until the single mothers are ready to take full control. All the land, generously donated by the King, and equipment will remain under the ownership of the Happy Hearts Association. No single individual will have sole control over an enterprise; instead, they will collaborate with one another, ensuring transparency in all activities.
